Thomas Friend

January 13, 1956 — April 14, 2026

Thomas William Friend Jr., 70, of Worcester, passed away on Tuesday, April 14, after a short and courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by the love of his family.Born in Worcester.

Tommy was the son of the late Thomas “Billy” Friend and Hazel (Wing) Friend. He attended Worcester Public Schools and enlisted in the United States Navy at a young age, carrying that sense of pride with him throughout his life.

Tommy lived a simple life, but one that was full of love, laughter, and the little moments that meant the most. Music was one of his greatest joys—especially Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, and Nat King Cole. He never held back, singing LOUD and proud wherever he was, even during his final days, bringing smiles to those around him.He was a familiar face in his neighborhood, spending countless days sitting on his stoop across from Crompton Park, just like his beloved sister Kathy.

Tommy had a gift for conversation and connection—you could always find him talking with neighbors, sharing stories, or simply enjoying the presence of others. Tommy loved playing cards at the Brown Square and the Vernon Hill Post, where he worked for many years.

He found happiness in these simple routines and the friendships he built along the way.He was a truly generous and thoughtful man, always thinking of his family and showing his love through small tokens and gestures that meant so much.

A devoted New England sports fan, Tommy could often be found cheering on his teams with a Coke Zero in hand, fully invested in every game. He also dedicated many hours each month, over the course of many years, to donating blood to The American Red Cross—a commitment he took great pride in. Although he had no children of his own, Tommy’s heart was deeply rooted in his family. He helped his sister Kathy raise her grandchildren—his great-nephews and niece, Darian, Hazel, and James—whom he loved dearly and lived with. He shared a special bond with his great-great-nephews, Aiden and Mason, cherishing every moment he got to spend with them. Tommy will be remembered for his big heart, his loud music (even in his hospital room), his easy conversations, and the way he made people feel seen and cared for. His presence in the neighborhood and within his family will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his loving siblings: Eileen Scampini and her husband, Joseph; Maureen Pizzarella; Joseph Friend and his wife, Debra; and Daniel Friend and his wife, Doreen. He also leaves behind his niece, Christeen Friend, who was like a sister to him, as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, great-great-nephews, cousins, his remaining uncle, Paul Friend, dear friends, and his beloved “best friend,” Scarlet, his nephew’s puppy. He was predeceased by his sister Kathy, his brother-in-law Lenny Pizzarella and many Aunts and Uncles.

Following cremation, a celebration of Tommy’s life will be held at a later date.

“Your voice, your laughter, and your presence will forever echo in our hearts. We will miss you more than words can ever express, but we will carry your love with us always.”

“Til we meet again, may God bless you. Adios.”
-Elvis Presley 1977
