It is with deep sadness that the family of Robert Francis Sargent, Jr. ("Sarge" also "Bobby") announce his passing on Saturday, January 3, in his home in Shrewsbury after a 14-month heroic battle with Glioblastoma (GBM). He was 61 years young. Bobby grew up in the Bradford section of Haverhill, Massachusetts, where his passion for all sports, especially hockey took shape. Bobby played competitively in multiple youth hockey leagues, then on to Haverhill High School, travelling extensively with great support from his parents. Bobby attended Fitchburg State University (FSU), where he continued playing hockey for the Division 3 Fitchburg State Falcons and met and fell in love with his future wife, Julie (Hoy) from Brighton, Massachusetts.
After college, Bobby worked for 20 years as a United Parcel Service (UPS) Supervisor and then worked for Stop & Shop for the last eighteen years until
his brain cancer diagnosis caused him to stop.
His journey on this earth was marked by a gentle, generous spirit and quiet strength that carried us through the pain of GBM.
He gave his all as a father to his daughters, Shannon and Christina. From late nights with them as newborns to dressing them and getting them ready for preschool to writing winning speeches for school elections. For Shannon, this continued when he delivered the most heartfelt speech that brought tears during his daughter Shannon's wedding. For Christina, he paved a way for her to attend her dream school NYU, supporting her with long talks and walks in New York. His love and devotion lives on in our memories and we will miss him every day.
Bobby leaves his loving wife of 33 years Julia A. Sargent, his daughter Shannon Meade Noyes, her husband Michael, his shining light Emma Grace Noyes (grandaughter) of Westford, his daughter and primary caregiver Christina Julieanne Sargent of Shrewsbury. He also leaves his father Robert F. Sargent Sr. of Bradford, his loving sister Connie Smith and her husband Mitchell Smith of Ivins, Utah; niece Cassie Ford and husband Richard and great niece Adalyn of St. Augustine, Florida; nephew Mitchell Smith Jr. of New Hampshire. He is predeceased by his mother Linda Sargent of Bradford.
He was also loved by his sister-in-laws and their families: Mary Quin and husband Paul of Burnsville, Minnesota and nephews Daniel and Michael; Johanna Anderson and husband Urban of Hemet, California.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Glioblastoma Foundation.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Rose of Lima Church, Northborough, Massachusetts at 12:00 pm Saturday, February 7. The following day we will toast his life and love of sports with the finest IPAs on Sunday, February 8 (Super Bowl Sunday) at a private room at the Tree House Brewery in Charlton, Massachusetts from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
