In Loving Memory of Richard F. Wheeler

A Quiet Soul with a Steadfast Heart

Richard “Dick” F. Wheeler, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, professor, and gentle soul, passed from this life surrounded by the family who loved him as deeply and quietly as he loved them.

Born to Richard and Annette Wheeler of Northbridge, Massachusetts, Dick was the eldest of four children in a bustling, lively home filled with the laughter and energy of siblings Jack, Pat, and David. The Wheeler family grew up side‑by‑side—quite literally—with his Uncle George, Aunt Helen, and the cousins next door. Those carefree neighborhood days were the backdrop of Dick’s earliest stories: water fights with cousins, games that stretched from yard to yard without borders, and the adventures of a little boy with a big love for the outdoors.

One such adventure was his pet horse—yes, a horse—who trotted proudly through the neighborhood with young Dick perched on its back. The day it escaped, galloping freely down the main street of Whitinsville, his mother chased behind it, no doubt with equal parts panic and amusement. It became one of the many stories that formed the folklore of the Wheeler household.

A student-athlete of strong mind and stronger will, Dick graduated from high school in 1958 and went on to attend Providence College, earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics. His academic journey then brought him to the University of Notre Dame, where he completed his master’s degree in 1964. Throughout those years, he showcased his talents in basketball, football, and track—disciplines that reflected his quiet competitiveness and steady determination.

In July of 1964, Dick accepted a position at Becker Junior College teaching Economics and Personal Finance. What began as a job offer soon blossomed into a lifelong vocation. Dick served as a professor for his entire professional career, guiding generations of students with patience, clarity, and the understated confidence that defined him.

Around that same time, Dick met Lois, the woman who would become his best friend and the great love of his life. Together, they built a family anchored in warmth and steadiness. Their son Rick and daughter Jacquelyn were the pride of Dick’s life, the truest testament to the love he carried even when he didn’t speak it aloud.

Summers brought the Wheeler family to the local Webster Lake for picnics and canoeing and Hampton Beach, their cherished escape. Memories were made in the sand and sun—walking the boardwalk, breathing in the ocean air, sharing simple joys that became lifetime traditions. In later years, Dick and Lois returned to Hampton Beach for concerts at the Casino Ballroom, reliving the soundtrack of his youth. He loved the greats—Buddy Holly, Bob Dylan, the Beach Boys—and his vast record collection remains a time capsule of melodies and memories only he fully understood. In retirement, Dick found joy in the quiet of the outdoors, especially while canoeing and kayaking.

Dick belonged to what some call the quiet generation—a man who didn’t broadcast emotions, but lived them. He expressed love not through loud declarations but through constancy: a roof always overhead, wisdom freely given, time shared without hesitation, and devotion that never wavered.

In his grandchildren, he found a new kind of joy. Their presence softened him, brightened him, and drew out the gentle humor and affection that those closest to him cherished. They will remember his smile, his stories, and the way he made them feel seen and safe.

Dick’s life was a tapestry of simple truths—family over everything, work done well, a home filled with music, the comfort of familiarity, and the steady heartbeat of a man who loved deeply without needing to say so in words. His children knew they were loved. They loved him fiercely in return—through every chapter, right up to his final moments.

Richard F. Wheeler leaves behind a legacy of quiet strength, unwavering dedication, and the immeasurable impact of a life lived with humility and heart. His story lives on in the memories of those who knew him, in the lessons he taught, and in the family that continues to carry his love forward.

May he rest in peace, knowing he gave the world exactly what it needed from him.
