SUDBURY - Norah Erica Valentine (Hornemann) passed away peacefully at home in Sudbury, Massachusetts, on May 22, 2026, surrounded by family, after a long illness.
Norah was born on May 30, 1942, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and grew up in a multicultural environment shaped by her German and Austrian heritage and the vibrant culture of South America. She spoke German at home, learned British English in school, and was fluent in Spanish, creating the distinctive accent that so many people fondly remembered and enjoyed trying to place.
She attended the Pitman School of Business and later continued coursework in the United States in accounting, psychology, and sociology. Throughout her life she was known for her intelligence, independence, resilience, and strong work ethic.
In 1966, Norah survived a burn accident on her leg in Argentina, which led her to travel to the United States for multiple surgeries. Though she originally intended to return to Argentina, life unfolded differently, and she built a rich and meaningful life in America surrounded by family, friendships, work, and lifelong learning. Her strength, determination, and ability to persevere through physical challenges remained defining qualities throughout her life.
Over the years Norah worked in administrative, registrar, and payroll management roles, including many dedicated years at Atlantic Union College in Lancaster, MA. Later, she spent more than 25 years helping manage businesses and charitable foundations with her lifelong friend Maria, where she became deeply valued for her organizational skill, warmth, humor, and ability to support countless evolving projects and people.
Norah maintained a passion for learning and exploration. She was deeply interested in psychology, integrative healing approaches, and personal growth. She loved classical music, museums, beautiful drives, historic places, travel, meaningful conversation, discovering wonderful restaurants, books, art, and culture. She especially cherished animals throughout her life, including her beloved Scottie dogs Lili and Niro, along with many cherished cats over the years.
She is survived by her son Charles Edward Valentine and daughter-in-law Donice Valentine of Massachusetts; her daughter Sylvia Valentine Henrichsen and son-in-law Paul Henrichsen of California; and her three grandchildren Brandon Valentine, Ashley Valentine, and Elizabeth Valentine, all of Massachusetts.
Before her passing, Norah was able to experience a beautiful “Living Legacy” memorial book created by family and friends, filled with heartfelt memories, reflections, and photographs spanning many chapters of her life. She often remarked how strange it felt that so many beautiful things are usually only said after someone passes, and she was deeply moved to personally receive and experience this extraordinary outpouring of love while she was still here with us. Her family is profoundly grateful that she was able to fully feel the love, admiration, and connection reflected back to her during her final days. She will be remembered for the many ways she supported and encouraged so many others throughout her life.
A private family gathering will be held. Her ashes will later be scattered in meaningful natural places chosen by Norah and her family that brought her peace and joy throughout her life.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Norah’s honor to organizations that reflect her lifelong love of animals, nature, beauty, and culture, including the MSPCA-Angell, https://www.mspca.org/, New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill, https://nebg.org/ or the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, https://www.gardnermuseum.org/
Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Kelly Cremation and Funeral Care in Worcester. If you would like to be included in Norah’s ongoing legacy book by contributing a memory, story, or reflection, please contact her daughter Sylvia Valentine at valentinesylvia@gmail.com or leave a message in the guestbook at www.kellycremation.com
