WESTMINSTER - Kenneth Arthur Smith (Art) passed away peacefully at home on June 7, 2025, with his family by his side, after facing lung cancer with quiet courage and grace for over a year.
Known for his calm presence and steady demeanor, Art welcomed and cared for many people throughout his life without judgement or expectation, offering hospitality and kindness, simply because it was in his nature.
Art never wavered in his love for his family. He will be greatly missed by his two sons Michael Smith and Matthew Smith, his daughter- in-law, Jill Krysil, his two grandsons, and his beloved daughter, Justina Smith (“Pook”) with another grandson on the way. In addition, he leaves behind his former wife and close friend, Valerie Capone along with a loving extended family. His lifelong friends, Maureen and Jan Vanderhoof, Art Calvillo and Bob Ruberti stood by him with steadfast support and companionship, uplifting his spirits and sustaining him until his final moments.
He found joy and purpose not just in the work he did, but in the people he did it with. He taught abroad in Germany and Japan before returning to work as a middle school teacher in Leominster, Massachusetts. During his summer and even in retirement, he continued working until as long as he could, as a hardware store employee, a house painter, and a patient observer at Leominster Hospital. His coworkers will remember Ken’s love of trivia, easy-going nature, generosity and his reliability.
Art pursued many passions over the years, including antiquing, golf, playing cards, painting, writing, and debating. He even tried his hand at flying—one solo flight was enough to check that box. Above all, Art cherished opening his home to friends and family, gathering around the fire, enjoying each other's company and engaging in lively debates where he often played the ever-curious devil’s advocate.
In his journal, Art wrote “sometimes you give more than you get, sometimes you get more than you give, the former is so much better than the latter.” In honor of Art’s generous spirit, let his memory live on through a quiet act of kindness or a donation to a cause close to your heart.
A celebration of life will be held this summer with family and friends.
Arrangements are under the care of Kelly Cremation & Funeral Care, 154 Lincoln Street, Worcester.
