UPTON - Karen Ann White, age 76, of Upton, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2026, within her home. By her side was her devoted husband of 52 years, Gregory Marshall White, holding her hand in a beautiful final testament to their enduring devotion. She will be cherished for her radiant spirit, her steadfast marriage, and her deep, lifelong commitment to her family.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Karen was the daughter of the late Donald Hale and Priscilla (Rice) Wallingford. Raised in the nearby suburb of Downers Grove, she was the second oldest of four children in a bustling household rooted in the Christian Science faith. Karen's early years were shaped by the lively interwoven dynamics of a big family. She found her unique place between her older brother, Don and her younger siblings, David and Corliss. She shared a brief but profound bond with her baby brother, Douglas “Dougie” Hale Wallingford, from his birth in 1960 until his passing in 1966.

Some of Karen’s fondest early memories were made during idyllic summers spent at the family’s cabin in Harbert, Michigan. Built entirely by hand by her father and tucked into the woods, it was a cozy, rustic escape where she and her siblings would climb a wooden ladder to share the single upstairs loft. She vividly remembered falling asleep to the lingering scent of firewood and the loud, rhythmic hum of cicadas buzzing through the open windows. Countless family photographs capture the joy of those days—walking the wooded path down to Lake Michigan, soaking in the sun, and enjoying the surf. It was a beloved lakeside tradition she treasured, returning years later to share the magic of that cabin and those sandy shores with her own growing family.

As a teenager, Karen discovered her gifts for art and music, participating in weekly piano lessons, evening chorus groups, art classes, and school plays. In one such play, she starred as Alice in Alice in Wonderland alongside a cute kitten named Bing, who played Dinah, the renegade pet. Bing was quite the performer, and the two grew so close that at the end of the show’s run, Karen took him home.

After graduating from high school, Karen attended Principia College, a small liberal arts college in Elsah, Illinois, rooted in the spiritual values of Christian Science. At "Prin," Karen formed lifelong friendships and developed and refined her vocal talent, becoming a classically trained stage performer, as well as studying early childhood education.

Music and motherhood were the twin pillars of her life. She possessed a powerful, operatic soprano voice and shared this gift as a devoted soloist at Christian Science churches. Yet, for all her devotion to music, the only calling that surpassed her love of song was her deep desire for a large family. It was a dream built on a boundless love for children, and one she brought to beautiful life by filling her home with the lively, loving energy of the family she raised.

After graduating from college, Karen followed her parents to Boston, fulfilling a lifelong dream of moving to New England. She had always been captivated by the region's charm, drawn to its quaint colonial village greens and white-steepled churches. She quickly put down roots, finding work as a kindergarten teacher and settling into a small apartment in Framingham, Massachusetts, alongside her beloved kitty, Bing.

Karen and Greg’s beautiful, 52-year love story began playfully in 1974 at the Framingham Christian Science Church. Sitting near the back during a Sunday service, Karen was immediately drawn to a handsome, broad-shouldered man near the front—and was quite relieved when her friend Dave Horn confirmed the blonde sitting beside him was merely his sister. Gathering her confidence, Karen introduced herself after the service. They found they had much in common, and discovering Greg studied broadcasting, she enlisted his help editing her vocal recital tapes, which served as her musical resume. When she later tried to pay him, Greg playfully refused and asked for chocolate chip cookies instead. She soon delivered a fresh plate to his door, only to find him gently cradling his newborn niece, Laurie, in a recliner—a tender sight that melted her heart. A homemade steak and strawberry rhubarb pie dinner at her carriage house apartment soon followed, and the rest was history. Side by side, they created a warm home and a loving family, leaving behind an enduring legacy of steadfast devotion, deep faith, and endless joy in surrounding themselves with those they loved most.

Beyond her profound devotion to their five children and grandchildren, Karen found beautiful escapes in watching classic movies, attending the Boston Ballet, and her lifelong hobby of collecting antique and vintage dolls. She also possessed a uniquely determined dedication to her paperwork. A champion list-maker, she maintained carefully defended piles of mail and receipts for every occasion.

Along with her husband, Greg, Karen leaves behind her children: Matthew White and his wife Lyn of Culver City, CA; Timothy Mackenzie and his husband Scott of Longmeadow, MA; Jonathan White and his wife Grace of East Walpole, MA; Nathaniel “Nathan” White and his wife Daisy of Monroe Township, NJ; and Elisabeth Ann “Beth” Griffin and her husband Alex of Ashland, MA. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren: Maxton and Grant Mackenzie; Emilia, Elijah, and Caleb Griffin; and James and Annabelle White; as well as her siblings, Don Wallingford and his wife Connie, and Corliss Wallingford, along with many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, as well as her brothers, David and Douglas Wallingford.
