Remembering Abhay (Abu)

It is difficult for me to write about Abu in the past tense. He was my only sibling, my kid brother. Although we were chalk and cheese in temperament, he was always a steady constant in my life. As a child, he was bubbling with life and mischief, forever looking to play sports, and failing that playing pranks. Beneath that fun-loving exuberance was a gentle and kind soul, and that essence stayed throughout his life.

He was an affectionate son, a brother I could count on, a dependable husband, and a proud and loving father to two daughters.

At IIT Delhi, Abhay was an exceptional all-round sportsman, known for his speed, strength, and competitive spirit. The affectionate messages from his batch-mates, decades later, have been a revelation and deeply moving. They remember him as a warm, generous person, someone who was popular and welcome across the various groups in the hostels.

At Bayer, his colleagues recall his kindness, his warm smile, and his calm manner even in difficult situations. Hearing their recollections has helped me appreciate another side of my brother.

Over these difficult past days, I have realized how much of Abu's life I knew only in part. I knew the boy I grew up with and the brother I argued with but also could turn to, but his friends, colleagues, wife, and daughters knew those other sides of him.

I hope this website brings together those different memories of Abu. Please share those through stories and photographs, so that we all may get to see him more clearly and completely.

Abu is survived by his wife, Dinta Devani Pathania; his daughters, Anushka and Aarika; his mother, Manju Pathania; and his brother, Vikram Pathania. He was preceded in death by his father, Jagnandan Kumar Pathania.

His Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, November 4th from 9:00 - 10:00 AM at Rural Cemetery and Crematory Chapel, 180 Grove Street in Worcester. His services will be livestreamed here https://client.tribucast.com/tcid/a26106077913746
